Re: Timberline Trail section hiking: Cloud Cap to Newton Creek and back 7/20/19

Excellent post and photos. Thanks! Admittedly it's a value judgement, but the advent of trail running and the seemingly large number of participants somehow detracts from the "wilderness experience", at least for me and from a backpacker's perspective. I wonder if the focused attention to the trail ...

Re: Timberline trail campsite question

Aimless, Thanks for your comment. I agree entirely re: TT and recognized that before my trip plans changed at the last minute (from Mt. Margaret, due to lack of water on a long section of the Boundary Trail to the TT). The TT was also very crowded in 2016 which was the last time I completed the loop...

Re: Timberline Trail conditions in early July

I was there ~10 days ago. There were swarms of biting flies on the TT between Ramona Falls and Elk Cove supplemented by evening-time mosquitoes (though they were far outnumbered by the grimly determined and frequently suicidal flies). There were fewer on other sections, and none above timberline. La...

Re: Timberline trail campsite question

I concur with Dean's assessment. I completed the loop <2 weeks ago. Many campsites were overcrowded (i.e., mostly occupied) and Elk Cove had a couple fouled with toilet paper...in the campsite! RE: Sandy River, the campsites on the stream were occupied and this was mid-week! I had the same experienc...

Mini Report on Timberline

Returned Friday from a standard clockwise loop of Mt Hood on the Timberline Trail. I last completed this loop in 2016 prior to the "new and improved" crossing of Elliot Creek. Since this topic is as well-worn as the trail, I'll only note the salient points from my perspective: 1) There was an abunda...

Re: Wallowas Super Loop: 8/1/19-8/2/19

An excellent, interesting and highly informative trip report! Many thanks!! I'm very impressed with your navigation, Google Earth and hiking skills. When I did the "standard" Wallowa Loop last year, it seemed that there were hordes of day hikers and campers (few of whom had the "LNT" philosophy in m...

Re: Timberline Trail - nighttime loop 8/2/19 - cougar stalking

To the OP: Your WordPress blog posts suggests you're considering bringing "a slingshot" to deal with animals: that's a manifestation of nearly incredible arrogance and disrespect for nature. If you actually managed to hit a cougar with a slingshot, you'd likely provoke a justly deserved defensive at...
