But the area is slow to green up. The new green grass is usually much more prominent by now.
Not only has it been a cold winter, but that part of the state (from The Dalles down through Crook County) is STILL mired in a severe multi-year drought.

By the way, over the past few months I've added links to your wildflower site where the FG is in concordance.
I saw that, thanks.

Re: Hell's Canyon end of March 2023

It turns out that it hasn't been especially WET out there, just unusually cold. (This is true almost everywhere in Oregon and Washington this year.) Here's a map that shows the percentage of normal precipitation: https://water.weather.gov/precip/index.php?precip_layer=0.5&product=percent&time_frame=...

I listen to audio books, or podcasts also. For a long hike this might be a problem keeping your phone charged.
This is why I use an iPod nano. It's really a bummer that they don't make them anymore.

How do you stay motivated during long hikes, and what are some strategies for overcoming mental barriers?
How long are the hikes you're doing in the Philippines?
Hmmm... are you waiting for the other spam to drop?

Re: Strategies for staying motivated during long hikes.

Audiobooks. They don't really "motivate" me, but they distract me from pain and/or boredom.

Re: Flagging In The Gorge

For the record, I'm not saying that Hashers are responsible for all the flagging. Just answering the question, "what kind of trail runners would have so little disregard for personal safety and common sense?"

But what kind of trail runner would want to run off trail through thick poison oak?
Hashers. I had a roommate who was one, and they had an amazing disregard for poisonous plants.

Re: High Clearance/AWD Necessary for Trail Access?

I drove a tiny Toyota Yaris (5.8" of ground clearance) around the PNW for 15 years and very rarely felt like I was missing out. You can go to a lot of trailheads in an ordinary car if you take it slow. A few notable exceptions for me have been the north Silver Star Mountain trailhead (after about 20...
