Re: Freeze Dryer Cooperative?

That is a really good idea. I don't think I would participate but it sounds like fun.

Most of the food hubs in the area have commercial kitchens. Maybe they would be interested in hosting your freeze drier?

Re: Elk Meadows and the Argyle Tree

So maybe the bark itself cracks when the tree is under load? And then the tree grows a bit more wood where the bark was.

Re: Seeking information about caves and lava tube tunnels in Gifford Pinchot National Forest

https://www.oregongrotto.com/big-lava-beds-washington/ but, for the reasons above, maps and exact locating references are gatewayed for members. From that site: Several weeks later we returned, and did a survey of the newly discovered cave, and it was a healthy 646 feet long, with potential for mor...

Re: seeing any mosquitoes this December?

There were a few getting into our house whenever we opened the door a few weeks ago.

The asian stinkbugs aren't nearly as bad this year compared to last year.

Re: Fall explorations in the Gifford, Lost Creek, Dry Creek and unknown bonus

In Washington the best source is the DNR Lidar Portal You can download data from there, but I have been happy with the hillshades.

I have it set up for editing OpenStreetMap with the tips at this link: http://www.jakelow.com/blog/using-wa-dn ... gery-in-id

That is a gorgeous view on a gorgeous day. I'm glad road 41 was in good shape to that point.

I have heard that beacon rock is especially bad. There must be one LEO that takes this all seriously?
The Park Ranger office is directly across the road from Beacon Rock. If they don't make a point of their permits system there, no one will take it seriously anywhere else.

Re: Favorite PNW rain gear?

I live in a swamp. So my must-haves are muck boots and a wide-brimmed oilskin hat. I also own a rain slicker and oilskin pants. The pants are for when I know I will be out in a downpour, I use them the least often.

Re: Whipple Creek Loop, WA , trail update

I took a look at Clark County's GIS. And it seems that one could make an offtrail route from Fairgrounds park to Whipple Creek park on county land. Mostly by heading due west from the developed park, through taxlot 182413000 which is a great big field, then crossing NW 11th Avenue near the unnamed c...

Re: Wildfire, Smoke, Air Quality Resources

WTA just added a wildfire layer and AQI forecast layer to their Hike Finder map. I don't know where they are sourcing the data from, but it sure is handy to have the hiking information with the smoke information. You can read the announcement at their website.
