Re: Best Sunset Hike?

We ended up taking the Tom, Dick, and Harry trail to the top of Harry, and we got to see a great sunset! I didn't realize just how many peaks we would see from that spot. We were able to see Jefferson, St. Helens, Rainier, Adams, and Hood. I would do this again!

Re: Best Sunset Hike?

The question is, do you want the sun setting behind Hood, or sunset light ON Hood? If the latter, then yeah, you can't beat Bald Mountain. Hiking there from Top Spur is much easier than from Lolo Pass. (And if you're feeling REALLY lazy, the view from Lolo Pass Road is nice.) Tom Dick & Harry isn't...

Best Sunset Hike?

I am in from out of town and would like to do a hike to get good sunset pictures, preferably with Hood in the shot. Can you guys recommend a good hike for that? We are staying in Rhododendron right off 26 for reference. We thought about Tom, Dick, and Harry or Bald Mountain - are those good options?

Re: Nick Eaton / Gorton Creek 12/24/18

My first ever backpacking trip was from the Eagle Creek trail head, over the area you are mentioning, to an overnight at Deadwood Campground. It is so sad to see it like this, but there is some beauty with the fog and little bit of snow. Thanks for the pictures.

Re: toughest creek crossings on Hood

I'm sure it differs from year to year and morning to evening, but I would say Coe was the worst with Eliot as a close second. I found a spot to ford White where it was just at my ankles and calm last August. I brought water shoes and forded about half the crossings since my balance with my pack wasn...

Re: Blister Prevention

... I currently wear my Lowa renegades in warm weather and Zamberlain steep 760's when its cooler/wetter... I use the same combination. I have very wide feet with a narrow heel and trail runners that are wide enough for my toes allow my foot to slide around inside, which makes for very unstable foo...

Re: Blister Prevention

I am super happy to report that I got through my 9 days on the Wonderland Trail without a single blister!! I do think that I would do better with a boot with a wider toe box since the only place I had pain in my feet was on the outside edge of both big toes. I went with KT tape on my heals, Injinji ...

Re: Blister Prevention

I have ankle issues as well so the trail runners are not an option for me. I currently wear my Lowa renegades in warm weather and Zamberlain steep 760's when its cooler/wetter and they seem to be the best of the multiple boot I have bought over the years...but again...frequent sock changes seem to ...

Re: Blister Prevention

Since you're already a boot person, have you thought of going legit boot person? Nicks, or White's locally made (Spokane) boot companies, that the hardcore outdoor working folk would swear by, loggers and wildland fire specifically. You'll definitely pay for it, they aren't cheap, but they're custo...

Re: Blister Prevention

Thank you for those thoughts! I know so many people swear by trail runners. I wore Salomon Speed Cross trail runners with Superfeet for the Timberline last year, and I had so many problems! Perhaps another brand/fit would work better and I should look into that after this trip, but the mesh uppers a...
