Re: Full Monty Campground Review :)

Thanks for the photos Jerry. I drove over and had a look at that area a couple years after that fire. It was sad. Glad to see it recovering nicely.

Re: Full Monty Campground Review :)

I used to camp at Monty quite often back in the 1980’s and 90’s. Loved it. Fishing was good too. But then that whole area was torched by wildfire back in 2002. How’s it recovering? Do you have any pictures you can post?
Thanks

Re: Painted Hills/Blue Basin/Clarno, March '24

Hi Jerry. It’s a small BLM undeveloped campground about 4.5 miles south of the entrance to Painted Hills. It’s easy to miss, there are no signs for it, but it’s visible in Google satellite view. There’s no potable water there, no restroom, no garbage, but it’s free. It’s right by a creek, and other ...

Painted Hills/Blue Basin/Clarno, March '24

DSC9141.jpg . (opening shot) It’s been thirty years since I last visited the Painted Hills in central Oregon. I've been contemplating a return trip for eons, but just hadn't gotten around to it. For me, spring is arguably the best time of year to visit 'The Hills', so that stretch of amazing weathe...

Re: Three Fingered Jack backpack, Sept. 2021

Reading this, it leads me to think you may misunderstand the permit/quota system. As I understand it, all you need is a single permit to enter a wilderness via a particular trailhead on a particular day. That one permit is then good for a group of up to 12 hikers to engage in unlimited travel withi...

Three Fingered Jack backpack, Sept. 2021

84760F42-281F-4E16-B204-06149D66E81E.jpeg (opening shot) It’s been 30 years since I last visited the Canyon Creek Meadows near Three Fingered Jack. I remember being quite impressed with the area, so a return trip has been on my list for quite a long time. It also happens to be one of the few places...

Re: Water filtration suggestions

I third the BeFree recommendation. It works great for day hikes and for backpacking. I've been using this filter for five years now (not the same one, I'm on my second filter now I think, but they're fairly cheap). For overnights I also take a 3 liter HydraPak Seeker water container bag. It's lightw...

Re: Mill Creek Wilderness 5/28-31/2021 (and lessons in getting lost)

Besides taking a whistle, water and your phone on a poop mission, it's also a good idea to have a decent pocket knife on you at all times as well as a good fire starter like a mini-Bic or a ferro rod. Fire could make all the difference on a cold night lost in the woods.

Re: The Plains of Abraham, 1987

I also found this pre-eruption image I intended to use for my 2009 trip report on the Plains of Abraham. It’s hard to tell, but it may show some stunted trees growing there prior to the eruption... https://photos.smugmug.com/Recent-Galleries/The-Plains-of-Abraham/i-BPgg55p/0/6a9e8038/O/plains%20of%2...
