Re: Best Easy Access Newt Sight Seeing?

Soapstone Lake, on the way out to the Coast. Combine it with a trip to the beach... it's a one mile hike in, and I saw dozens of newts only a few weeks ago. I wasn't even aware of that lake and it is in a great location. I'll definitely check that one out. My own son would love to do some newt sigh...

Re: Best Easy Access Newt Sight Seeing?

I want to thank everyone again for the suggestions. As it turned out, my friends stay was a day shorter than either of us realized until they were actually here so we had to ditch the lake visit. However, on the trip to Multnomah Falls and the gorge lookouts, we stopped at Dalton Point which was alm...

Old Frazier Mountain Road vs BotW Elk Lake Road Comparison?

I'm thinking of taking a trip up to the Roaring River Wilderness area and I have repeatedly seen warning about the Fraizer Mountain Road being 4 miles of horrifying travel. I have a 4WD Pickup with reasonably moderately high clearance and I recently drove into Elk Lake in Bull of the Woods to take m...

Re: Doing Thru Hike Of Chinook Trail - Need Help From Wahtum Lake To Troutdale

If anyone's interested, my first article on my upcoming hike of the Chinook Trail just went up on The Trek's website (it's a pre-hike post, I don't start until October 1): https://thetrek.co/choosing-chinook-trail-fall-2018-thru-hike/ Sean Great article Sean! I'm really looking forward to following...

Re: Best Easy Access Newt Sight Seeing?

Thank you all for the suggestions. This is very helpful! It sounds like we may have missed their main season but we can give it a shot and see if we can get lucky.

Re: Doing Thru Hike Of Chinook Trail - Need Help From Wahtum Lake To Troutdale

Don't know how I could have forgotten Snorkel was in the group. She gave a talk about the trail on an episode of The Trail Show podcast. It came back to me as soon as I read your reply. I regularly check out thetrek.co so I'll keep an eye out for your article. I think this is exactly the kind of thi...

Best Easy Access Newt Sight Seeing?

We have some visitors coming from Japan and one of their sons is a huge bird and amphibian fan. He specifically asked if we could go someplace where he could see newts. I have backpacked at lakes that have a bunch but we need to keep the trip to something with easy access, think Mirror Lake or less....

Re: Doing Thru Hike Of Chinook Trail - Need Help From Wahtum Lake To Troutdale

I'm sure you have probably already seen this, but just in case this is the best resource I have heard of for this hike. http://www.yellowleaf.org/scramble/g/r/2015-06-14-chinook.html I have only heard of two groups completing the Chinook trial. The first was local thru hiker Allgood and his two frie...

Re: Pole Creek Burn Area on Three Sisters Loop

Is there a specific place where they would list if there were a camping restriction? I'm not seeing anything on the Forest Service website for the Pole Creek Trailhead, nor in their "Alerts and Notices" section, and they don't say anything about a camping restriction on their Summer Trail Access and...
