Re: Non-buggy backpack <5 hr drive from Portland

Thank you both! I haven’t fine-tuned my anti-bug strategy. Obviously camping next to a bog for two days this time of the year is out. The trip reports I saw recently for Mt Adams weren’t encouraging, but it’s probably very location specific. Thanks again!

Non-buggy backpack <5 hr drive from Portland

I'm looking for a 2-night backpacking spot that is not super buggy , and is no more than a 4.5-hour drive (one-way) from Portland. I went to Eagle Cap this time of the year in 2011, and it was perfect, but it's just too far for the time I have. Any tips? We're in pretty good shape and can handle a g...

Re: Overnight Fret Creek to Palisades Point and Lookout Mt.

Great overnighter and one of my favorite areas! Your salamander looks very much like a Cope's giant salamander, right on the eastern edge of its range. Wow - I've never seen one, but now I know where to look! UPDATE: according to the Facebook herp ID group, my salamander friend is a Ambystoma graci...

Re: Overnight Fret Creek to Palisades Point and Lookout Mt.

We camped at Oval Lake just a few weeks ago - the froggy evensong was something special, but no mysterious snuffling in the wee hours. If you go again, I endorse keeping going past the Palisades to the Fret Point lookout tower, which is an active firewatch in the summer. It is manned June - Septemb...

Overnight Fret Creek to Palisades Point and Lookout Mt.

It's July 8, 2018 and I'm just back from an overnight backpack trip. Loads of wildflowers (couldn't post photos of all), a reliable water source at Oval Lake camp, and two spectacular overlooks. I started at Fret Creek trail head and hiked in just shy of 2 miles to reach Oval Lake. It's short but th...

Badger Creek Overnight 2018

About this time last year I overnight backpacked in Badger Creek Wilderness. I saw (and heard) a rattlesnake, so it was an exciting and memorable trip. http://www.oregonhikers.org/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=25522&p=193596#p193596 This year's trip I covered many more miles, but things were more tame. ...
