Elk Mountain - Elk Meadows Loop

Hiked the Elk Mountain - Elk Meadows loop in Mt Hood National Forest. We enjoyed great views, nice weather, and some fall colors. IMG_5483.JPG The trail to Elk Mountain was overgrown with huckleberry bushes (no huckleberries), but easy to follow. Great views from the Elk Mountain lookout site, inclu...

Re: High Divide

Yes, you have to reserve the specific campsites for specific nights on recreation.gov. Many of the backcountry camps in Olympic National Park show 99+ openings on recreation.gov, essentially unlimited. But all the camps in the Sol Duc area have a limited number of permits, looks like 6 - 28 dependin...

High Divide

Completed a three-day backpack along the High Divide / Seven Lakes area of Olympic National Park. We started at Sol Duc Trailhead and headed toward Deer Lake, on a counterclockwise loop. Bear.JPG We camped at Lunch Lake, which fortunately limits the number of campers, as most sites were full by the ...

Re: All The Way ‘round Mt Adams: 9/2/22-9/4/22

Thanks for all the great info and inspiration. Just completed the loop, counterclockwise. It was a toss-up on direction but thought it might be best to hike the tough parts while fresh. But, going from near sea level to 8500' on the first day was taxing. Camped at Sunrise, Foggy Flat, and Horseshoe ...

Nick Eaton Gordon Ridge Loop

Hiked the Nick Eaton - Gorton Creek loop counterclockwise, to hike uphill on the very steep Nick Eaton trail. Got a late start and because it was cloudy, I did not go out to Indian Point, peak 3152, or Ridge Camp. The Gorton Creek trail is heavily overgrown after leaving the burn and above the Deadw...

Re: All The Way ‘round Mt Adams: 9/2/22-9/4/22

Thanks for the trip report. I am thinking of trying this hike. Looks like you did not have an ice axe, any regrets about not carrying one? We'd also go counterclockwise. Would that be easier or more difficult for any reason?

Gnarl Ridge

Great hike up Gnarl Ridge - Lamberson Butte - Newton Creek . The flowers were done and there were almost no huckleberries, but the trails are in great shape, although dusty, and the views were outstanding. Mt Hood from Gnarl Ridge.JPG Lamberson Butte.JPG Newton Drainage.JPG Newton Ridge.JPG Lamberso...

Mazama Trail and Ho Rock

Backpacked the Mazama trail to Cairn Basin, set up camp and day hiked to McNeil Shelter and Ho Rock. The Mazama trail is in great condition, thank you Mazama's trail maintenance team! The flowers and huckleberries are peaking. We had views of Mt Adams, Mt Rainier, and Mt St Helens in addition to Mt ...

Alpine Lakes 7/26/2022 - 7/30/2022

We spent 4 amazing nights in the Alpine Lakes camping first at Marmot Lake and then Tuck Lake. From Marmot we hiked to Lake Clarice, Jade Lake and Pea Soup Lake. From Tuck we hiked to Robin Lakes and then part way up Trico Mtn. The weather was warmish for that elevation, low 80s at the lakes. The mo...
