2019.06.29-30 Loowit Trail
After doing most of it in sections as part of other hikes, I decided it was time to complete the Loowit Trail around Mount St. Helens. My buddy Matt, itching to backpack, joined me at the last minute and made the experience all the more enjoyable. We started at June Lake and headed counter-clockwise...

Re: Mount Margaret Lakes Loop
I would say it's most likely dry, unless you're willing to make a side trip and work your way down to St. Helens Lake below Coldwater Lake.

Goats galore on Mt. Ellinor
Looking at Google Maps, I realized the southeastern corner of the Olympic Mountains was as close as Goat Rocks, without the 20 miles of extra rough forest road to traverse to get to Berry Patch. Known as Staircase, the area of the park has multiple short, steep leg burners. My hiking buddy and I too...

Mount Margaret Lakes Loop
I had never been around the lakes in the Mount Margaret Backcountry north of Mount St. Helens. Trying to remedy the situation, I planned an overnight trip but noticed all the designated campsites were reserved on Fridays and Saturdays for the foreseeable future. Not wanting to wait or take days off ...

Re: Saint Helens Loowit Trail
Sweet post. I'd been really close to doing this loop myself depending on the snow. I figured I'd start at June Lake or the Climber's Bivouac earlier Saturday, hike around to the Plains of Abraham, camp and finish Sunday morning.

Mt. Margaret Backcountry in full bloom
I stopped by Mount St. Helens Saturday to see what the conditions were on the Boundary Trail and in the Mount Margaret Backcountry. I'm happy to report it's fully accessible and in full bloom. I started at South Coldwater Lake and hiked northeast up Coldwater Ridge, passing by some trail work crews ...

PCT from Dee Wright to Opie Dilldock Pass
After a couple days at the Oregon Country Fair, I took off to the Three Sisters Wilderness for some alone time. The Pacific Crest Trail crosses Oregon Highway 242 on McKenzie Pass about 1/2 mile west of the Dee Wright Observatory, a cool stone hut looking out over the Three Sisters to the south and ...

Re: Ape Canyon (Mt. St. Helens) - 7/2/2017
Sweet. I had tried it a month ago from the Windy Ridge side, but turned back at a sketchier snow bank because I didn't have traction.

West Onion Peak bushwack
Essentially broke and with about 100 miles worth of gas left in my tank, I left Astoria Sunday afternoon for Arch Cape, where I sometimes hike in the area of Onion Peak when I want to get some distance and elevation gain in without driving a few hours to the real mountains. The pull-off is about 1/2...
