Re: McKenzie Pass open?

I drove up 242 from Sisters last weekend (on my way to sunriver) and while the gate was closed, I think it was one of those seasons where the road was clear and just not open yet. I hiked up Big Lake area on memorial day weekend, and there was just scattered handfulls of snow, and its been warm and ...

Re: Smith Rock Misery Ridge Loop 5-26-19

Jessbee -

Do you recommend an early snowfall trip, like October/early November, or a pre-melt off trip, like March? I end up going to Bend like 4-5 times a year for other reasons, so making a second trip to S.R.S.P. shouldn't be too difficult.

Smith Rock Misery Ridge Loop 5-26-19

This trip report was a large departure from my planned hiking over the weekend, but despite all the hype, I was still impressed by the beauty of Smith Rock. I have never been there before, and as a native Oregonian, it felt a little criminal, so I feel lucky as to have finally had the chance to reme...

Re: Rogue River March 2019

Jerry - I know its 2 months later than your report here, but I've never been to the Rogue River Trail (which feels a shame, such as why I am rectifying it). I am planning on doing this with another person, and using their car as a shuttle rather than an out-and-back, on Memorial Day Weekend. Anythin...

Recommendations for a new hiker

Hi- While I've got all the gear I can afford/need, my girlfriend is trying to get interested in backpacking, so she can be ready to go on some weekend romps with me. Most of the gear I have is generally higher end (Zpacks, Gossamer, Thermarest, etc) but that makes it relatively expensive too, and sh...

Re: Timberline Trail: Eliot crossing, 2017 update (new trail

Chip - They're just idiotproofing it for me as I had never messed around on Hood before a month ago. ;) It definitely felt excessively long, but at the same time, when you're doing a 40ish mile loop, adding a half mile or something in the middle of it, shouldn't really effect anyone's decision wheth...

Re: JMT Conditions

Thanks for the quick response Keith. I'm giving myself as much time to acclimate to the elevation as I can. My permit lets me start hiking on Tuesday the 15th, but I'm driving out of Corvallis on Saturday morning, so I'll probably spend Saturday night with friends in Fresno, then head over to Lone P...

JMT Conditions

Howdy everyone - As you're my go-to source for hiking info, I figured I'd check in with you to find where you get your out of state info from. I'm planning on hiking the JMT from Cottonwood Pass to Yosemite Valley between approximately Aug 15th and Sept 5th. I've been curious about snowpack on the t...

Re: 7/22-23 Timberline Loop

Yeah. It was a inconvenience, and added 5 minutes or so to the overall hike, but nothing seemed dangerous or impossible(impassible?) to me. The logs all seemed very secure where they were resting, not like they were about to tumble down the slope any further.

Re: Timberline Trail loop 7/27-29

Looks like you did a much better job figuring out which stream/creek/river was which, I blurred all them together in my post (minus the Elliot that was hyped up ahead of time). 3 days seems like a much nicer pace to hit. Were your backpacking buddies pleased with the experience enough to want to hik...
