Re: Walupt Lake to White Pass, Goat Rocks July 25-29, 2016

This is pretty much the hike I am planning on doing this weekend. Or at least as similar as I could hope for a trip report about. I've only got 3 days, and I didn't want to make my girlfriend drive 8 hours roundtrip from Corvallis to shuttle me from one end to the other, so I am altering my original...

Re: 8/31-9/2 Breitenbush Lake to 3 Fingered Jack

Thanks for the heads up Burnside. This was the first time I've tried using google for hosting, and I must have messed up the sharing permissions on it. I think I made it work now.

Re: 8/31-9/2 Breitenbush Lake to 3 Fingered Jack

If anyone wants to scroll through like 100+ photos from this hike to see more of what is out there and get a better feel for everything, rather than just the like 10 photos I posted in my report, I just dumped all the photos I took on a google album. Lots of them that look like nothing are just a ca...

Re: 8/31-9/2 Breitenbush Lake to 3 Fingered Jack

While they aren't the same forests they used to be, I do enjoy walking through the occasional forest fire scar. A. you get to see a lot of the topography that would normally be hidden. B. you get a lot of views that would normally be hidden. C. watching the plants that come back one year, two year, ...

Re: Need Advice on Wallowa Trip

1. Agreeing with everyone else. There are people there, but I've never felt the 'crowded' feeling that you get at the gorge. It varies between "if I twist my ankle, no one will ever find me" to "I would like to at least say hi to someone today". I went around 9/22 a couple years ago, and probably sa...

8/31-9/2 Breitenbush Lake to 3 Fingered Jack

Having never been to the Mt Jefferson area, I talked my girlfriend, and her son (both of whom had never really gone backpacking) into hiking into Jefferson Park with me from Breitenbush Lake via the PCT. We left my car down by 3 Fingered Jack off the Santiam Hwy, so I could get more miles in, and th...

Re: Water Filter/treatment for Timberline?

I did the Timberline about 2 years ago, and I used a Sawyer Squeeze attached to a Smart Water bottle. I never had any problems with it clogging up, nor having to go more than a couple miles without a watersource. My memory of the longest section was the climb up from Ramona Falls area to the Cairn B...

Re: 8/16/19-8/18/19 Obsidian TH to South Sister

Obsidian TH already has very lax usage restrictions. Its like 40 people / day and 40 separate people / night. I didn't have a permit until Thursday, and they had availability for Friday. It was 6$ for 2 nights for the limited use area restriction. Its a bittersweet problem. It will be nice to have f...

Re: 8/16/19-8/18/19 Obsidian TH to South Sister

Part of the burned out area approximately 1 mile from Obsidian TH off hwy 242. https://imgur.com/zyjq1DP.jpg Shortly after the approach trail meets with the PCT. https://imgur.com/OAdJhRH.jpg Its not a misleading name. There literally is endless Obsidian up there. The ground is just made out of it. ...

8/16/19-8/18/19 Obsidian TH to South Sister

Starting from Corvallis, I took a 1/2 day of work on Friday, and drove up 242 early afternoon. The weather was great, and the traffic wasn't bad. I got to the trailhead about 2:30, and was off into the dust at about 2:45. My original intention for the weekend had been to drive to Devil's Lake and su...
