Coldwater Peak, 8/7/2022

While the women folk were out white water rafting, I opted to spend one of the hottest days of the year in an area with almost no shade. I arrived at the Johnston Ridge Observatory at 0715. There were two parties who clearly had camped in the lot (one was folding a tent) and one other car arrived as...

Re: Ape Canyon - 2022-07-27

I just camped at the Blue Lake trailhead and was tormented by flies. I only heard one or two mosquito but until the sun started to go down there were flies, particularly deer flies, everywhere. Picaridin kept most of them off of me but the buzzing was incessant.

Re: Cinnamon Ridge attempt & Goat Marsh, 7/1/2022

Such a nice name for a ridge but I am completely dissuaded now. Have you encountered swarms there in the past? Thanks for the log! :? This was my first hike along the Kalama and up the Cinnamon trail. I talked with one couple near where I parked who seemed to know the area well. They were surprised...

Cinnamon Ridge attempt & Goat Marsh, 7/1/2022

I took the day off and headed to one of my favorite areas to explore, the SW side of Mt. St. Helens around the Blue Lake and the Kalama Horse camp. My goal was to do the Cinnamon Ridge loop going clockwise, about 15 miles with some decent elevation gain and nice views. I hit the trail at 0800. Rathe...

Larch Mountain from Grouse Vista, 6/25/2022

The hike for this weekend had to be relatively close to Portland (about an hour away) and relatively short (5-6 miles). Given my preference for not being in crowds when I hike, I chose Larch Mountain, about 20 miles north of Washougal. There are only two trip reports posted so what the heck. We opte...

The Bee Line and Wycliffe Butte, Cranbrook, BC 6/16-17/22

This is a little out of the normal range of hikes described on this site but ... my wife and I drove to Cranbrook for a few days to visit our son. If you haven't been there, the town is in SE British Columbia with the Purcell Range to the west and the Rockies to the north and east. There are many, m...

Re: Grassy Knoll and attempt at Big Huckleberry, 6/8/22

How was the drive to the trailhead? I drove the length of forest road 68, in from Carson and out through Willard. I thought it was in pretty decent shape. There are potholes but nothing horrible, just slow down for them. A 2WD car can easily get to the trailhead. There are trees down on the road, m...

Grassy Knoll and attempt at Big Huckleberry, 6/8/22

I decided to take the day off to go for a hike. I opted to try for Big Huckleberry from the Grassy Knoll trailhead. The weather forecast was not exactly balmy but I assumed that there would be some flowers out. I hit the trailhead at 0815. The car said it was 54 degrees but the stiff breeze made it ...

Wildflowers at Lyle Cherry Orchard 4/17/2022

I originally proposed to my wife that we check out Cook Hill but saw that the summit was buried in a thick cloud bank and that neighboring Dog Mountain had a decent layer of snow. It didn't look like much fun so we kept going east and decided on the Lyle Cherry Orchard hoping for a nice wildflower d...

Hood River Pipeline Hike 4/3/2022

I hesitate to describe this as a "hike" given the far more vigorous and challenging ones posted throughout the website. But, I noticed that there weren't any trail reports listed and I wanted some kind of exercise to feel a tiny bit better about picking up a wine club order so we decided to visit it...
