Wildflowers at Lyle Cherry Orchard 4/17/2022

I originally proposed to my wife that we check out Cook Hill but saw that the summit was buried in a thick cloud bank and that neighboring Dog Mountain had a decent layer of snow. It didn't look like much fun so we kept going east and decided on the Lyle Cherry Orchard hoping for a nice wildflower d...

Hood River Pipeline Hike 4/3/2022

I hesitate to describe this as a "hike" given the far more vigorous and challenging ones posted throughout the website. But, I noticed that there weren't any trail reports listed and I wanted some kind of exercise to feel a tiny bit better about picking up a wine club order so we decided to visit it...

Re: East Sooke Regional Park, 3/26/2022

What a pretty coastline! Do you know the provenance of the petroglyph? From what I've read, the artist carved it into sandstone using a technique called "skimming" which involves chipping off the darker layer leaving lighter colored crystals behind. Experts don't have a way to estimate the age. I'v...

East Sooke Regional Park, 3/26/2022

With the Black Ball ferry running out of Port Angeles again, my wife and I took a long weekend to visit our son. It is always nice to visit Victoria but we needed a break from walking on pavement so we struck out for East Sooke Regional Park. It is about 15 miles west of Victoria but it takes nearly...

Re: Cape Disappointment 2/13/2022

Regarding Deadman's Cove, there weren't any signs along the trail that said the beach was closed. There are obvious trails down to the beach as well as reinforced steps cut into the bank. Given that the lumber used in the steps is of differing sizes, it looks like they're user built. However, once y...

Cape Disappointment 2/13/2022

For a change of pace, I decided to go for a drive and check out the trails at Cape Disappointment, just outside of Ilwaco, WA. It is a Washington State Park on the site of a former coastal defense installation with two lighthouses. The lighthouses, interpretive center, campground, and major gun empl...

Lyle Cherry Orchard redux, 2/11/2022

My wife went out of town so I decided to return to the Lyle Cherry Orchard trail after our abortive attempt a few weeks ago. I dropped her at the airport a o-dark thirty this morning and headed east, arriving at the trailhead at 0605. It was cold (38 degrees), clear, and wind free. The only other ve...

Re: Lyle Cherry Orchard Slip & Slide, Jan. 16, 2022

We had limited time and were moving so slowly that we had to turn back before reaching the top. We hit the really gooey stuff after the turn up from the first bench. Very slimy & slippery with some decent suction too.

Lyle Cherry Orchard Slip & Slide, Jan. 16, 2022

On our way to pick up a wine club shipment, my wife and I decided to check out the Lyle Cherry Orchard trail for the first time. We just wanted a little exercise but it felt more like walking up and down a slip & slide at times. Sunday the 16th was pretty dreary and overcast at that end of the gorge...

Re: Area by Indian Heaven - First Real Snow

You do a really nice job with the videos. I'm envious about the range of edible mushrooms that you found. I can usually get my fill of chanterelles and lobsters but only rarely see others. Maybe I need to head to higher altitudes. To keep people legal, each national forest has a permit system for ha...
