Re: Marion Lake 12/29/2023

Thanks! Does it say how much snow is supposed to be there? If it's less than 24 inch I can make it in the Jeep, probably 12 inch with the truck. Depending on ice layer conditions. Here was at the first snow on Oct 27th, probably 6 inch of fresh.PXL_20231027_213209140.jpg Here is the source map: htt...

I'll head up to Ollalie next week, see how the snow has held up.
The modeled snow maps show a fair amount of snow at Ollalie - less than normal, but I'd be surprised if you could make it up there. Let us know how that adventure goes.

Re: Corral Springs to Roaring River 11-28-23

Well, now that I've put myself on the spot, here are three ( I think the three) that I haven't hiked: Rim Rock #487A Eureka Peak #671 Buck Lake #728 So I'll have to get to them, I guess. Buck lake is a REALLY short trail - only a half mile to the lake - it used to go up around the rim of the lake a...

Re: Corral Springs to Roaring River 11-28-23

@Rob, that sure looks like a clip from a map that Howard Rondthaler drew from memory for me when I was in college, circa 1982 or 83. I still have it. I was working on a hiking guide for the "proposed" Salmon-Huckleberry Wilderness as part of a Sierra Club effort to promote the area and Howard was a...

Re: Corral Springs to Roaring River 11-28-23

All this begs the question: Why was the current alignment of the 507 built at all? I can see that it might be an attractive, remote destination for an adventurous fly fisherman and apparently there was an established campsite on the river, but no longer. This is a really good question - my only tho...

Re: Corral Springs to Roaring River 11-28-23

I was surprised to see that the FS had indeed done maintenance on that trail last year. It was the first time in YEARS they had touched that trail that I'm aware of, but I talked with the trails supervisor and she confirmed it. I was also surprised to see they actually cut logs all the way down to t...

Re: Salmonberry River Steam Donkey Hunt, Oct. 6th, 2023

Matt's Subaru did just fine but he had to take it out of traction control mode so he could spin the wheels if needed. There was only one spot where it was little dicey, but we got past it all right. The road has been very recently regraded so is looser than normal, but it didn't seem to hurt. I fou...

Re: Salmonberry River Steam Donkey Hunt, Oct. 6th, 2023

I walked the canyon several years ago before it got so overgrown. So much history and artifacts to see and I'm always amazed at the power of natures fury. I had always wanted to go down Beaver Slide road, but I was always a bit worried about how steep it was, and getting back out (even with 4WD). Yo...

Re: Memaloose lake

I was up there a few weeks ago - the beginning of the trail is unaffected but the closer you get to the lake, the more intense the burning was. The campsites around the lake unfortunately got all burned up in the fire. The unmaintained trail up to South Fork Mountain also took quite a hit. Near the ...

Re: Burnt Granite Trailhead has been obliterated

Thanks for the info, Rob! So I take it the FG directions to the "trailhead" are as before, but the walk begins up a revived section of road? Also, can we use your photo in the FG. I'm thinking I'll quote you directly if that's O.K. Yes - you walk up what used to be a vague old road which is now ver...
