Birds with best nest spot ever

I spotted this birds next along the Larch Mtn. trail early this morning and took a quick side trip down to multnomah creek to film the bids going in and out with food for the young that I assume are inside. My best guess was these are rock wrens, but I'm sure someone on here and ID them in a second....

Re: Defiance Trail vs Starvation Ridge trail -

Well I should chime in since I went up starvation - down wyeth two weeks ago and up/down defiance last week. Starvation is much steeper, especially with the cutoff, but there is more of a rest/grind quality to it. Defiance is grind/grind, it just never lets up! As a result, the mental steepness of d...

Re: Oneonta Logjam History?

I've gone across the log twice, the first time it was icy and wet and it was quite scary, my slippery nylon hiking pants made things worse, I almost lost it a couple of times and I was looking below me at all the hazards I might fall on if I did. However, next time I was more prepared, even though i...

Re: Quick note of Defiance/Greenpoint snow level

conditions were the same on Saturday as my previous post, almost no melting last week. At least the other legs of the triple D were snow free for us! (Dog and Devil's rest)

Quick note of Defiance/Greenpoint snow level

FYI, the snow is still 4 or 5 feet deep on top of Defiance on 5-22, around the 4400 foot level descending from Greenpoint mtn we were still in 2-3 feet of snow and we finally hit a very clearly defined snow level at 4000 feet on the Wyeth Trail. Warren lake on the way up was mostly melted out at 390...

Re: Need an avvy shovel?

I forgot to add that by chance one friend had a USPS mailing scale in the back of his vehicle one day when we returned to the cars. We put his BD transfer 7 on the and got 24 oz... and then the lifeline delivered the shock of the century when it registered at just 22 oz! What! We were convinced that...

Re: Opal Creek on steroids, 4/16/2011

Wow Matt, I wish I could have been there, instead I was getting soaked on Table Mtn! Looks like some awesome creek and water volumes. I have a ton of the water-proofing re-treatment stuff if you want, just let me know and I will bring some to the next hike.

Re: Need an avvy shovel?

I've used the lifeline shovel for a number of tasks this year in the mountains, including digging a bunch of avy pits, a snow cave and even getting my car out of the sno-park (the advertised use of the shovel!) I can't comment on the alloy question but some of my friends are quite fond of the lifeli...

Re: YOUR Hiking Safety Tips

In the winter or any foul weather hike, I tend to carry extra upon extra insulating layers and skimp on the firestarter materials. I figure if conditions are such that I am going to need a lot of firestarter to get something going, I'd rather just conserve my energy, plop myself down and wait out th...
