Re: Season for Umpqua River Trail?
Bghiker - why do you prefer it? More services? The shuttle? I get the impression the Umpqua might be a more lush PNW rainforest, while the Rogue, being so hot and dry in the summer, is strangely (to me) more like an east-side Cascade forest, except for the most western sections. I think you hit the...

Re: Season for Umpqua River Trail?
The Lemolo and Maidu sections of the trail are 4-5000+ ft so you will most likely have snow there. From Lemolo downstream to Toketee, there will probably be some snow. Lemolo Lake Resort does a lot of winter recreation so some of the trail may be heavily snowshoed. You could call the resort and ask ...

Re: Looking for an overnight in the snow
I've done June Lake a few times in winter. It's a fairly easy hike from Marble Mountain Sno Park. There will be some snowmobiles for the first 1/2 mile until you get off the road but after that, I've not seen another person up there in winter in 3-4 trips. It's been a couple years but I don't rememb...

Re: Loowit Falls Hike from Windy Ridge
If you want the big crater/lava dome view, you may want to consider Johnston Ridge as a starting point rather than Windy Ridge. Its a longer hike from Johnston Ridge but the views are better. Windy Ridge is closer to the mountain but you can't really see into the crater from there because it is arou...

Re: disappointing lifespan for shoes
That's a bummer, Chip....I have only had one pair of Lowa's and so far they have served me well. I know you like to do the off trail hikes and I am usually on trail, but the boots with goretex have always served me well through many seasons of use. Hope you are able to find a pair of boots that serv...

Re: disappointing lifespan for shoes
As I said before, I love the salomon GTX shoes, but I have also had Zamberlain and Lowa goretex boots and have never had an issue. I'm sure I don't put as many miles on them as others but the goretex seems to last me several years before leaking and is well worth the initial cost of the boot. I usua...

Re: Winter Backpacking: Help Me Get Started
Hey there- I'm a hammocker too and have winter camped locally during the winter..mostly on Mt St Helens. I have a Hammock Gear 20 degree top and bottom quilt and have found them adequate. I am a warm sleeper though...so take that into account. I think a 20 degree bottom and top quilt are adequate in...
