Re: Gifford Pinchot Road 4109 to Silver Star Trailhead

Rode my bike up 4109 this past saturday and had to laugh at all the cars attempting to get up the road. Some folks indeed did make it, but I wouldn't attempt it with a vehicle that I cared about at all. It's been a few years since I last drove up that road. It was in rough shape back then with some...

Re: Hammock Camping in the Eagle Cap Wilderness / Wallowas

I'm also planning a backpacking trip there in mid September and have been debating about hammock camping too! Sounds like you might be there a week or two before me... After you return I'd love to hear how your experience was if you decide to hammock camp, where you stayed at, and what the general a...

Very few, although honestly we didn't look too hard. Most of what I did see were small, dry, and shriveled up.

Mt. Margaret Backcountry--Snow camping in Sept? 9/22-9/23/17

I've been wanting to check out the Mt. Margaret Backcountry for a while so I purchased a camping permit for Bear Camp and planned a quick overnight trip with a friend this weekend. The weather forecasts for the proceeding days leading up to our trip had been pretty bleak, with heavy rain showers and...

$140 Patagonia Gift Card -- Price Reduced!!

I've got a Patagonia e-gift card valued at $140.92 that I'd like to sell for $125. The card is good at any of their retail stores or online at patagonia.com.

Can you identify this Marmot Jacket?

I purchased this Marmot hardshell jacket 2nd hand and I'd like to know what model it is. I've searched around the net but haven't had any luck identifying it yet. So I'm hoping that someone here might recognize it and be able to tell me what its name is. I'm guessing it's several years old. http://s...

Re: Hells Canyon Loop: 6/19/14-6/22/14

Great TR! Loved all the photos and information. I've never been there but would love to go sometime as it looks and sounds amazing. Is that a canister of bear spray you were carrying on your sternum strap in some of the photos? If so, why? (I'm just curious as to it's intended use there in that area...

Re: On a similar topic... lightweight gear choices?

Synthetics also take up about 3x more room in the pack. I haven't seen anything even recently that compares to down. If you know of any please share... Like I said earlier, my synthetic Mountain Hardware Ultralamina compresses down to about the size of a loaf of bread, which is very comparable to t...

Re: On a similar topic... lightweight gear choices?

Mountain Hardwear's web site lists their current version of the Ultralamina 32° at 1 lb. 11 oz, but the price is $240. What can I say, I got a great deal on mine and the newer models are even lighter weight. They also show you the bag's EN ratings, both the comfort rating and the limit. This shows ...

Re: On a similar topic... lightweight gear choices?

Any sleeping bag that would qualify as UL will be down-filled, but that is just the beginning. I think traditionally that's been true, but newer synthetics are getting closer and closer to the performance of down. I have a synthetic Mountain Hardware Ultralamina 32° that weighs 2 lbs and compresses...
