Re: Hiker rescued off Gorton Creek trail
Anyway, hopefully this will lay bare the foolishness of trusting "just head downhill" as an exit strategy. Agreed! This was a big takeaway for me too. Didn't the lady who got stuck in a similar situation 2 or 3 years ago do the same thing? Try to bushwhack down a gully and fell and broke her ankle?

Re: Hiker rescued off Gorton Creek trail
Here's the story from the hiker himself: https://m.facebook.com/story.php?story_fbid=4045523378805161&id=100000426161280 Sounds like it all began when he was relying exclusively on his phone for navigation and the battery died. Had planned to hike Eagle Creek but when he saw it was closed he went so...

Re: Public Lands Getting HAMMERED by Crowds
A reminder to all that if politics are going to enter into these discussions, first and foremost what you post must be civil and respectful and should have some obvious bearing on hiking -- unless it is in the Off-Topic forum. The requirement for civility and respect extends further than just to ot...

Re: Public Lands Getting HAMMERED by Crowds
Basically, I don't begrudge users of any stripe heading into the wild blue yonder. It's certainly their right just as much as mine. I am picking up more trash than before, but generally I'm doing a pretty good job, I think, of avoiding the busy places, or I just get there early! This 100%. Public l...

Re: Hiker rescued off Gorton Creek trail
from the gofundme: "After a snow covered trail hid the path of his hike, he did his best to find his way. Unfortunately, it took Morgan 4 days of trekking, several falls and extreme exposure to make his way somewhere he could be found" I do not understand how "just turn around and go back" is not t...

Re: Oregonian broadcasting popular trails
Since the pandemic, I've been challenged to find new areas to explore in order to avoid crowds and I've found it incredibly easy, even within 30 minutes from Bend. Well, yes, I understand your point. But the Bend-Redmond-Prineville area is considerably less populated than the Portland metropolitan ...

Re: Oregonian broadcasting popular trails
As others have said, I'm quite happy to have everyone pile on to the most popular trails, that often have the most services and resources to manage, instead of spread rookie hikers into more fragile/less developed areas. That leaves the rest of the open space, well, open to whoever is willing to get...

Re: Owyhee Canyonlands Nov 2020
We drove a Subaru crosstrek, I'd say the high clearance was pretty essential. There were a few spots on the road that I looked out the side window while my husband was driving so I wouldn't get stressed out
