Unless you're going by the permit lottery statistics of course.adamschneider wrote: ↑October 2nd, 2019, 9:00 pmFunny you should say that, because the Snow Lakes area is the least coveted part of the Enchantments!

Enchantments...cut short
I entered the Enchantments lottery for the first time this year, and got permits! Huzzah! My permits were for Snow Lakes....this past weekend. Anyone who pays attention to the weather knows how this turned out... We headed up from the Snow Lakes TH on Friday morning and it is a CLIMB. The first 1.5 ...

Re: Cairn Basin status?
Yeah that was my general reaction. I kept repeating, "wait...10 hours???" BTW he summited Rainier 2 days before...no big deal

Re: Cairn Basin status?
for anyone interested - just talked to my coworker who ran the TT in 10 hours on Sunday. He said that the trail was clear of snow in this region (and most of the mountain)

Cairn Basin status?
Anyone been up to Cairn Basin in the past week? Based on TR for the TT, it seems doable but wanted to check in on how much snow might still be on the trail as I will have someone with me who is less experienced. I expect bugs will be starting to get bad, but that's the price you pay
Thanks all!!

Re: Elk Meadows - Put your fires out!
I've had this plan of hiking up a snowy Gnarl Ridge trail, expecting that on the exposed ridge above Lamberson Butte, there would be spectacular melted out spots, with water available from the nearby snow. Sounds like the time is about right for that. I think so, the group I ran into said there was...

Re: Elk Meadows - Put your fires out!
So, if you camped at Elk Meadows Saturday night in the first large spot on the meadow when you come around counter clockwise - you're welcome for handling that for you. And be responsible next time. My backpacking companion and I passed by them around 6pm Saturday night. I don’t remember a fire at ...

Re: Elk Meadows - Put your fires out!
yeah what about putting a fire out at night before you go to bed? I often let it go, at least if fire hazard isn't bad in which case I likely wouldn't have a fire at all I know someone who always puts the fire out completely. We joke about it. He's probably right :) I kind of like watching the fire...

Re: Elk Meadows - Put your fires out!
I wish I had taken a picture, there is just no way that whoever left could have thought that it was completely out. I feel like it's just laziness, people don't plan for how long it can take to make sure a fire is out. Honestly if I hadn't decided to check out the campsite, and just cruised on the t...

Elk Meadows - Put your fires out!
Wanted to get out of Portland and onto Hood this weekend, so decided on Elk Meadows. It was gorgeous, per usual, and great weather. Got to the trailhead about 10am and the lot was about 3/4 full. Trail is in good condition overall, some downed trees to work around but easily doable. The Newton Creek...
