Description
The Wicky Creek Shelter is a three sided shake-roofed structure constructed in the 1930s. The shelter used to be part of a rather rudimentary downhill ski/rope tow operation. There’s picnic table inside, and a pole fence prevents visitors from using it as a garage. Tall ponderosa pines tower overhead.
The area is a designated camping area without numbered sites, but there is an outhouse. You are not supposed to camp inside the shelter.
Driving Directions
Drive I-84 east to Exit 64 for Highway 35, White Salmon, and Government Camp.
After exiting, turn left on Button Bridge Road for White Salmon and Government Camp, and drive 1.1 miles, paying the toll on the Hood River Bridge.
When you reach the Washington side of the Columbia, turn left onto Highway 14W for Stevenson and Vancouver. Go 1.6 miles and make a right onto Highway 141 Alt. for Trout Lake and the Mt. Adams Recreation Area.
Wind up for 2.2 miles and, at the junction with Highway 141, bear left for BZ Corner, Trout Lake, and Glenwood.
Continue on 141 for 19.3 miles and come to a Y-junction in Trout Lake. Bear right here on the Mt. Adams Recreation Area Highway for Randle.
Go 1.3 miles and keep right at the junction with FR 23 for the South Climb, Sno-Parks, and Bird Creek Meadows.
In another 0.6 miles, make a left onto FR 80 for the South Climb Trail #183.
Drive another 3.7 miles on a narrow paved road, entering the Gifford Pinchot National Forest and passing the turnoff for the Trout Lake Big Tree, to the junction with Road 8040.
Turn right here for the South Climb; the road becomes gravel and gets narrow. After 1.7 miles, pull into the large open area on the left below the Wicky Creek Shelter.
