Wendy Rose

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Wendy Rose, on the Waterfront Renaissance Trail (bobcat)

Description

This stainless steel statue at the James and Joyce Harder Memorial Plaza commemorates the women who worked at the nearby Kaiser Shipyards in World War II. "Wendy the Welder" was a generic companion to "Rosie the Riveter" as women took on traditional "man's" work during the wartime labor shortage. The shipyards ran all along the river frontage both east and west of Ryans Point.

The statue, dedicated in 2011, was designed and constructed by a group of sculptors with the moniker "Women Who Weld." In 2013, the statue was beheaded by vandals but the missing body part was soon replaced.
