Description
The Illinois River West Trailhead is at the western end of the Illinois River Trail. There is a small picnic area and parking for 15 cars. If you keep going past the trailhead on the potholed dirt road down to the river, there's a primitive camping area at Oak Flat. The only amenity is an outhouse.
Another camping area is the Forest Service's Quosatana Campground about 10 miles before the trailhead and about 15 miles from Gold Beach. This campground has running water and restrooms. There are 43 sites. It's not too crowded in the off-season.
Driving Directions
From Portland, drive south on I-5.
Take Highway 38 to Reedsport.
Then take Highway 101 to Gold Beach.
From just north of Gold Beach, turn left (east) on Jerry's Flat Road and follow this paved road - which becomes FR 33 - along the Rogue River for 27 miles.
Immediately after crossing a major bridge at the confluence of the Rogue and Illinois Rivers, turn right (south) onto paved Oak Flat Road and follow it for 3.7 miles to a sign pointing to the trailhead on the left. The road is two lane paved the whole way, except the last three miles is one lane paved with pullouts.
