Northrup Creek Grand Fir

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

The tall grand fir, Big Tree Trail, Northrup Creek (bobcat)

This large grand fir (Abies grandis) is 70 inches across and stands tall and straight near Northrup Creek. The tree's girth makes it one of the larger grand firs in existence. Grand firs are shade tolerant and grow almost as fast as Douglas-firs. Grands are not as highly valued for timber as some other conifers, but they are a prized Christmas tree.

Another large grand fir of similar dimensions is now lying on its side at the southern end of the Northrup Creek Loop.
