Description
Mount Scott, an extinct volcano in the Boring Volcanic Field, rises to 1,091 feet, the highest summit in the Portland Metropolitan Area. The volcano, and others nearby, were formed during an eruptive phase beginning about 1.6 million years ago.
While part of the northern slope of Mount Scott is in Multnomah County, most of Mount Scott lies within Clackamas County, particularly the rapidly expanding community of Happy Valley. These southern slopes have seen heavy residential development in the 21st century as new suburbs spread eastward from the I-205 corridor. The Willamette National Cemetery is located on Mount Scott. There are communication towers on the summit ridge, which is mostly residential, and water tanks at the true summit. You can get to a few feet below the actual high point by following Ridgeway Drive along the north rim of Mount Scott's crater.
Mount Scott is named after Harvey W. Scott, a 19th century editor of The Oregonian newspaper.
