Fees and Regulations

  • Northwest Forest Pass (or America the Beautiful Pass) required to park at the trailhead.
  • Self-issued wilderness permit
  • Campground with restrooms and picnic tables

Driving Directions

Drive I-84 east to Exit 261 for La Grande and Elgin.

Turn right after exiting the freeway, and drive 53.5 miles on Highway 82 to the town of Lostine.

Where Highway 82 makes a 90-degree turn to the left, keep straight on the Lostine River River Road, which becomes washboard gravel, for 17.3 miles to the Shady Campground.

The trailhead parking is on the left, and the trail starts from the northwest corner of the Shady Campground on the right side of the road.
