Lemolo Falls

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Lemolo Falls from the North Umpqua Trail (bobcat)

Description

Lemolo Falls is the tallest waterfall on the North Umpqua River, and it’s hard to believe that, before the construction of the Lemolo Dam upstream, the falls conveyed several times the volume of water they do now. The Forest Service has these falls listed as 102 feet, but the Northwest Waterfall Survey claims them to be 165 feet high. Lemolo is Chinook jargon for ‘wild’ or ‘untamed.’

From the White Mule Trailhead, the North Umpqua Trail takes you 1.7 miles to a good viewpoint of the falls, allowing you also to experience a very scenic stretch of the river. You can continue another 0.8 miles to descend and cross the river on a footbridge to get a head-on view. On the south bank of the river, Trail #1468 takes you steeply down in about a mile to the base of the falls, but on this hike you don't see much of the river.
