Description
The Columbia River and Northern Railroad began operations in 1903 serving communities between Lyle and Goldendale. Passenger service ceased with the construction of roads in the canyons, but the freight line continued operations until 1990. By now, the line was in the hands of Burlington Northern. After the closure, it took two years to pull up the tracks and demolish the bridge over the Klickitat River. The rail right of way became public land, a status that was contested for more than a decade by Klickitat County and a number of local residents.
