Gold Butte Lookout

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

The Gold Butte Lookout has been recently restored (cfm)

Description

This lookout was completely restored over an eight year period (1999-2007) by volunteers from the Sand Mountain Society. They were able to recover 90% of the materials of the original lookout in order to make it a historic landmark. The lookout was constructed in 1934 by the CCC (Civilian Conservation Corps) and was staffed into the 1970s, including a stint as part of an air warning system during World War II. The lookout was protectively wrapped in the summer of 2021 as the Bull Complex Fire came very close.

Reservations are required to stay at the lookout and the fee is $80 per night. See the Recreation.gov site to make an online reservation.

If guests are staying at the lookout, please give them their privacy.
