Description
Naked Broomrape is not only one of the oddest named flowers in our area; it's one of the oddest plants. It has no leaves and chlorophyll, so it can't generate its own food. It has no visible stem and no real roots. It appears to be a tiny flower with no plant connected to it. Underground, the plant consists of a rootlike feeder that attaches to nearby sedum and saxifrage plants to draw nutrition parasitically.
Flowers are commonly very light purple, but may be completely white. A yellow version is more common in California.
