Drake Peak

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Light Peak and the Drake Peak Lookout from Drake Peak (bobcat)

Description

Drake Peak is at the north end of the Warner Mountains and can be reached by a short and easy cross-country jaunt along a ridge from the road to the Drake Peak Lookout (which is not on Drake Peak). There is a summit register at the rocky outcropping which forms the highest point. A whitebark pine forest spreads below on the east and north sides of the peak, while low sagebrush forms a carpet on the west and south slopes. The northeast ridge displays an array of rugged pinnacles, but these are not easily visible from the summit area. (Curiously, the shadow cast by this ridge shows up as a lake on some online maps!)

Looking back to the west, you'll see Light Peak and Twelvemile Peak, McDowell Peak, and Crook Peak stretching north from that summit. Beyond Light Peak to the west are the Drake Peak Lookout and Gearhart Mountain. Crane Mountain and the South Warner Mountains stretch into California, with snow-covered Mount Shasta also visible. You'll get good views east to Hart Mountain and Warner Peak, pyramid-shaped Beatys Butte, and Steens Mountain behind Hart Mountain.
