Anthony Lake

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Rocky isle, Anthony Lake (bobcat)

At 22 acres, Anthony Lake is the largest lake in the Anthony Lakes Recreation Area of the Elkhorn Mountains. The rugged peaks that form a backdrop to this serene body of water include Gunsight Mountain, Angell Peak, Lees Peak and The Lakes Lookout. A trail leads around the lake. There is a drive-in campground on its northeast shore and a walk-in tent campground on the southeast shore. This area is also one of eastern Oregon's major ski destinations.

Like the other lakes in the area, the lake is a consequence of Pleistocene glaciation, where moraines have dammed a stream and created a shallow pond. Some of these have silted up to become lush meadows. Two streams feed the lake, one from Lilypad Lake and the other from the Hoffer Lakes.

The lake is named after an 1860s settler named William 'Doc' Anthony.
