Harpers Ferry and the Appalachian Trail

Posted by Splintercat (2006-09-14)
Well, the most I can say for my trip to DC two weeks ago is that I managed to spend ONE day actually exploring a bit... other than that, it sucked: hot and humid, then abruptly switching to violent rain as Ernesto swept through Virginia. Oregon looked pretty damned good when I got home -- after a long-delayed flight and very rought takeoff in 40+ mph Ernesto wind gusts! Ugh.

So the following are some images from the short section of the Appalachian Trail that I walked in Harper's Ferry National Historic Park. The first image is of the Shenandoah, just upstream from the spot where it meets the Potomac. It's a very pretty river, complete with whitewater rafting!

From the historic town center, the Appalachian Trail climbs up a dramatic set of stairways -- some cut into solid rock, and all worn from years of foot traffic. The view on the left is looking up from the lower town at one of the hilltop churches, and the view on the right is looking back at the town from near the same church.

Wow...now that's a departure from what I'm used to seeing since I moved out here.  There's nothing like living in the PNW, but it's nice to see the sights from totally different areas as well.  Too bad about the weather!
