May 4th TAO Angels Rest Work Party

Posted by airdrum (2008-05-04)
Well it was time for part 2 of the TAO work on the Angels Rest Trail.  Today, we basked in the cool early spring Sun while cutting some serious trail and cutting 189 feet a nearly finished trail!  It was a great day to see the radical before and after transformation, we really felt like we built a trail today, and let me tell you, despite a bit of sore muscles, that feels REALLY good!

Here are some photos from our party.

The group ready for action

As we arrive, Dana shows us the current trail that we are working to decommission, which is ripping the ridgeline apart.

The we gathered around to watch a demo of how to go about removing the "duff" (organic matter that will decompose) from our to-be trail surface and how to cut into the hillside.

Let the work begin!

Woah, who says this isn't fun, look what we found!

I have to admit, photojournalism in situations just like this is what I spent a year in AmeriCorps doing, I just couldn't resist the great shots that were lying around that really gave a feel of the work and environment!

Before

After

Wow!

It was a great day and I look forward to the next day up here, when we will continue to cut trail and work on an awesome switchback around a stunning, giant fire scarred, but still surviving tree.  It makes me appreciate all the trails I hike on regularly even more now when I understand thje effort that goes into creating them, I hope to see many of you out there in the future!

Great photos, Andy! Looking forward to being on the crew again next week! You guys made some serious progress, that's for sure.

So... what IS that in Dana's hand, anyway..?

Cool, nice to be out there yesterday and meet everyone!   Hard not to dream about Half McClouds or Pulaskis last night huh?  I topped the day off proper with some root beer and it was mighty tasty after all the strain. :)  Earlier today I absent-mindedly pondered that my shoulders sure hurt for some odd reason carrying my work backpack, then gave myself a good "Duh!" and recalled all our efforts.

Nice work capturing shots from the day Airdrum.  I hope you can make the upcoming trips to continue documenting the progress.  I hope we get a chance to chat more sometime too.

Anyone know for sure if the other crew was going to be out there continuing the work this week?

Thanks for your work guys, and thanks for documenting your trip Andy!  I think it is really encouraging to read these, and truly helps all hikers understand what goes into a trail!  It also brings up all the conservation issues that surround trails and how important their presence, care and maintanence is.  So tremendous job to you all!  I promise I'll join one of your projects soon!
