Cape Horn, Friday, 5-2-08

Posted by Charley (2008-05-03)
Hello all,
I went up Cape Horn yesterday and here's ten pictures of my trip.

The trail winds around back of Cape Horn, with views to the North.  If I'm not mistaken, this is Silver Star Mountain:

Moving back around to the South side of Cape Horn, there are views of the Columbia.  This viewpoint demonstrates the high winds of the Gorge, huh?

There were lots of little blue flowers, and some yellow ones. . . I'm not the flower type, but I thought it might be of benefit to someone:

On the way around a bit of private land, hikers pass a couple of residences, and this sign:

Looking past this sign, in the driveway of the property, is an automated gate.  It looks like it's broken.  Curiously, it looks like someone rammed it while trying to leave.  Not trying to enter.  Has anyone heard anything about this?  Why would someone ram the gate trying to leave?

Past this mystery, the trail passes scenic viewpoints left and right.  Here's one view of the Gorge, with Cape Horn Rd. at the bottom of the photo:

There's also a view from above a railroad tunnel.  A train was just leaving the tunnel as I walked up (yep, that's the end of the train- it had three engines up front, one in back):

Finally, there was a nice little waterfall right next to the trail.  It was getting dark and this exposure took several seconds.  The following photo is a closeup of the same fall.

All in all, a lovely trail.  I'll be back on this one.  Thanks for reading.
Charley

One puzzling thing about that bent over gate is that it appears to have bent over while it was open.
Word has it that Friends of the Gorge is going to be removing the house this summer with about 90% of it going to a recycling outfit.
