General message: Off trail trip reports

Posted by jeffstatt (2008-04-30)

Portland Hikers now has a new forum for  Off Trail Trip Reports

The site was grown tremendously in the past year, and our traffic is way up.  So now we have to start taking a bit of responsibility for the impact of our presence in the outdoor community.  As a gesture of recognition to impact that might come of others wanting to repeat our adventures, we've drawn a draw a line of demarkation between standard hikes and off-trail ones.

Further this makes things a bit more inviting for the casual hiker to share their weekend dawdler or family stroll and not feel like it doesn't "live up to the others"

Feel free to post your thoughts on this move in this thread.  We've got a really great, friendly, and inviting community here so I'm open to everyone's suggestions.

It's REALLY important to me that we're inviting to newbies.  Ya'll have been GREAT about that!  Thanks to you all

A second question is - the value of moving existing off-trail trip reports into the new forum.

I'm for it...the only downside is it marks them as "new" again which might mess up people to use the "New Posts" button a lot

I've been waiting for a good place to comment on this subject.  Yes, for the most part, this forum is inviting and the people here are awesome.  However, I have noticed that some hold strong opinions on many subjects and don't tread lightly. A couple subjects of recent have been fires, guns, posting of other websites and a few others that I can't remember.  There are people with many different ideologies here.  Maybe if we have a negative opinion about someones inquiry we should just not answer.  I myself felt a little put off after one of my first postings, but found the site so usefull that I can't help but visit and post.  So, if you have a problem with guns or something like that, please don't blast the person who is asking about them.  Simply answer the question or if you can't let someone else answer.  Please, don't take this the wrong way.  I know that people can be very passionate.  Just remember our diversity here.  Not every person is as "green" as the next.

This is such a usefull website and appears to have taken a lot of hard work to build.  Thank you to those who have built it.  It's amazing!
