Flashback - Sunrise Area Hike 7-16-07 MRNP

Posted by Bryan (2008-04-20)

The idea had been presented to me to post some of my trips from areas around Mt Rainier National Park that were not from Paradise or Camp Muir and I thought "heck why not" So with the summer months not too far off I thought I'd start sharing.

For this hike I couldn't have asked for any better weather, the skies were clear and the temps were very comfortable. The mountain and her neighboring landscape were out in their full glory.

Here's a condensed report.

I started from Sunrise and headed up to Frozen Lake where I followed up to Skyscraper Pass then up to Skyscraper Mt. There's an easy boot path that leads to this summit which offers great views of the mountain and north over Grand Park. Off the summit and back to Frozen Lake and up to Burroughs Mt to visit the 3 peaks along this small range with 3rd burroungs offering views of the Winthrop Glacier far below.

From there I headed down to the Glacier Basin trail where I came accross a black bear.

Beyond the bear I went up from White River campground up the Wonderland Trail back to Sunrise. I got back to my car and I was exhausted, 18 miles in just over 8.5 hours!  A great day that I'll not soon forget.

Holy cow, what gorgeous photos! Damn, another for the "to do" list. This one definitely designated to the "summer" category.

Love the photo of the bear.. strolling along as if there wasn't a care in the world.

What happened with the bear?

Did you just pass each other on the trail and say hi?

Or did the bear run into the forest?
