Munra Point Sunday

Posted by chameleon (2008-04-14)

On Sunday afternoon I decided to take the short hike up to Munra point.  Little did I realize that half the other hikers in the Gorge had the same idea that day!  There were probably 30 people total on the trail.  It was funny as one couple I had passed on this very trail last year.  What are the odds of passing the same couple on a Munra Point hike two years in a row?

It was a fantastic day to be on the trail however, despite a stiff breeze the entire time.  The flowers were phenomonal, and the trail was dry and stable.  The wind made good flower photos very difficult, but I got a few nice pics (which I'll post tomorrow).  It was probably the second best wild-flower display I've seen in the Gorge.  (The first being Dog mountain last year)  The flowers on Munra Point trail are not as bold and concentrated certainly, but there are so many varieties!  Yellows, small blues, purples, etc... just awesome!

I also brought a small pair of binoculars this trip, and scoped out the canyon below.  More on that later though.  Great stuff.  Anyway, great hike on a great trail.  I was happy to see so many people enjoying a challenging trail, and being safe about it!  I bet even some other people on here were up there?  I'll post several photos later.

This year's heavy weather has made it hard to find hikes with gain that don't involve plowing through snow.  I've taken to combining a hike up Angel's Rest with one up Munra Point for a 10 mi, 3000'+ day.  On Sunday I hiked Angel's first (6 cars in the lot when I started, both lots full on my return) then drove over and hiked Munra, starting about 10:30am.  I had it to myself all the way up and thru lunch on top - only started seeing folks coming up as I was descending.  The flower display was truly awesome!  During lunch a bald eagle also flew by about 20' above me and there were two ospreys doing some kind of aerial dance that involved much screeching & diving.  An excellent day, particularly given the return of foul weather...
