Tanner lake loop

Posted by parkrangersue (2008-01-29)
Has anybody on here ever tried to make a loop using Tanner Butte trail down to Tanner lake and then over to Eagle Creek along Opal creek. It looks like there is a old road bed from the back side of the butte. I have been wanting to try it but I am usually on my own so I have been hesitant. Picture is from the top of Tanner Butte.

Don Nelson tried and succeeded doing a similar loop, but it sounded like a bear-a grizzly bear. I'd post the link except for I can't seem to find the thread, but it was a good read.

Edit: Retired Jerry found it. It's fascinating.

Hi Sue,

I've contemplated doing this "Opal Creek Loop" as well, and I plan to try it sometime this Spring, while the water level is high - to see the falls on Opal Creek in all their glory.  I'm very much hoping that the falls Don Nelson found on Opal Creek aren't the ones on the topo.  It would be pretty neat to find some larger falls up there as well.  My plan is to hike up Tanner Butte (in the snow), then descend the creek.

Last summer I hiked the Eagle/Tanner loop (awesome hike - trail is in terrible condition though) so I'm fairly familiar with the route up to Tanner Butte's summit.  I've also bush-wacked up Opal creek a mile and a half, so I know how the canyon looks.  I'm planning to bring neoprene stocking waders and shoes with felt soles for the creek descent - Opal creek has some of the slickest wet-rock in the gorge.

PS - Awesome fairy-slipper photo - my favorite gorge flower!
