Necklace Valley - Oct 12-13

Posted by jley (2007-10-24)
A few days out, the dismal weather forecast kept getting better & better... I originally had planned to do the enchantments, but couldn't really fit that in. So, I've been wanting to re-visit the Necklace Valley for some time anyway. To orient yourself, this is in the Alpine Lakes wilderness - the trailhead is a few miles east of Skykomish. The first day was a bit socked-in, and I made slow progress photographing all the mushrooms. The first ~4 miles are pretty flat, then you cross the river and it's all up. About a mile of that "up" is in dreadful shape - roots, rocks, mud... but still hikeable. I just made it just past the lakes as darkness fell.

Overnight, the fog turned to ice and coated all the boulders.. which made the next morning interesting. I managed to get up to a nice view of Glacier Peak, but had to head back too quickly due to obligations back home. Anyway, the highlands here are a great place, that really deserve a longer hike & more time... but I guess we steal what we can. Some photos are below. I've updated my web site at:

The flat part - about 4 miles of this, starts off in 2nd growth, but turns to old growth later.

Big Leaf! I love the texture in this one...

Coral Mushroom - a nice one!

The upper valley - Tank Lakes are just over the ridge

Correction...

That's white mushroom - 3rd picture is actually a Bear's Head Tooth mushroom - not a coral. Doh. Anyway, more at:
