Mirror Lake 9/29-9/30

Posted by Martell (2007-10-02)
I took my friend out on his first backpacking trip ever, which was also his second time going up by Mount Hood, and he has lived in Portland his whole life.  We had originally planned to go up Vista Ridge, but with all the snow, I decided we should do something easier.  It doesn't get much easier than Mirror Lake for an overnighter.

After several stops, we reached the trailhead around 2:30pm and we could tell it was going to get cold when we got out of the car.  By around 9 at night, when we headed for the tents, it was down to 38 degrees and there was some very light snowfall.  It didn't rain at all until late in the night through the next morning.  We waited for it to slow down before we packed up and headed out.

I had never been to Mirror Lake, so I was a bit disappointed that clouds mostly covered Hood up.  Tom, Dick and Harry Mountain looked amazing with the recent snow, so that helped make up for it, as well as the fall colors.

Not a bad spot for your first overnighter

Hey Dan, what a great get-away you had with your friend! The combination of green, the colorful leaves AND snow all in one shot, pretty cool:) Even with the cold temps and rain, did your friend enjoy the outing?  At least it looked like you had the place pretty much to yourselves?
