Sunrise to White River (Mount Rainier) 9/2/07

Posted by Martell (2007-09-04)
I camped up at the White River Campground in Mount Rainier NP over Labor Day weekend.  Because of the road closure, we drove north on I-5 and headed east from the southern part of Tacoma.  Even so, it was still only about a four hour drive.  White River is a nice car camp, and amazingly, there were several open camp sites all weekend long.

The main hike we did was a shuttle from Sunrise Visitors Center, past Frozen Lake, over First and Second Burroughs and down into Glacier Basin.  From there we headed back to the White River Campground.

Here is myself, Little Tahoma and Rainier from First Burroughs:

Fearless marmot that is also my new avatar (at least I'm trying to make it work...):

The terrain up here was described on a sign as being similar to Arctic Tundra:

Some more Rainier:

The storm damage is incredible:

Great photos, Dan! That is easily my favorite side of Rainier -- the most graceful profile of a bulky peak, front-row view of the Emmons Glacier and a LOT fewer people than at Paradise.
