Cannon Beach June-Sept. 2007

Posted by Jane (2007-06-20)
Okay, so hour walks on the sand is NOT hiking...but it IS summer now, so going to the beach is "IN"....especially when you can get PAID for it! I scored a part-time summer job for two days a week (consecutive, stay overnight in arranged accomodations) in Cannon Beach ,OR.  Paradise ... I have to work most of the day hours indoors (and avoid the already jammup of tourists), but can squeeze in the sunset strolls...and the early morning beach walks (I don't know what time the sun rises, but 7am is early enough for me!   Hopefully my schedule may allow for some hikes in the area, such as in Ecola State Park at least. http://www.oregonstateparks.org/park_188.php  .

a little after 9pm...

sunset snackers...

these folks had the right idea...

glorious morning! (a little after 7am)

low tide near Haystack...

Haystack Needles...

happy beachcomber...

relics from recent architects....

Cool Haystack Rock photo!!

We have yet to do the fire on the beach thing - it just looks like the most mellowed-out thing you could do!

If you can get several hours from about 2-3 hours before low tide and an hour afterwards, a good hike is between Tolovana Wayside and Hug Point Wayside. There are several points that can be rounded only at half-tide or below. Lots of tide pools, caves and a nice waterfall near Hug Point, plus the "road" around Hug Point with its interesting history. My dog Hysson and I did this 2 years ago starting at Hug Point Wayside, got almost to Tolovana and turned back due to the crowds in that area and the consciousness that I needed to get back around Hug Point before the tide advanced too far.

And since when is walking on the sand not a hike? It really does things for your calf muscles!

It sounds as though the rip tides are really bad right now. Per my son the surfer, if you get caught in one, don't try to swim back to shore but swim parallel to the shore until you get out of it.

Lucky you, Jane, to get PAID for being there!!!
