Mitchell Point

Posted by drm (2007-04-24)
This is a nice and short but steep hike very close to Hood River that gets to a _very_ airy viewpoint on an exposed ridge. The I84 exit to Mitchell Point is at mile 58, and apparently the parking spot is Mitchell Point to them, but a 1.3 mile trail gains 1200 feet to the top of the prominent ridge that you can easily see from many spots in the Gorge. There are no signs indicating a trail goes there, you just go towards the "Lausman" picnic area, and take the immediate first left on a dirt road that quickly turns into a single track trail. Despite the lack of signage, it is a well-maintained trail. No waterfalls or even creek crossings, just a high spot on the fin/ridge that will get some people's hearts beating a little faster because of how steeply it drops off on either side. Strangely, it was very windy down low but almost completely calm on top. The parking area is also the trailhead for the Wygant Trail, which is probably where most visitors hike.
