Eagle Creek Trip Report - Circa 1924

Posted by Splintercat (2007-04-21)
Well, we cranked up the 'old Model A this weekend, and made the long drive to the beautiful new campground and trail at Eagle Creek, along the new Columbia Gorge Highway. After driving east of Troutdale for a couple of hours on the new road, we rounded the scary viaduct at Tooth Rock, the last twist in the route before Eagle Creek.

Just beyond the viaduct the highway curves down to crystal clear Eagle Creek - crossed by another one of the graceful spans that dot the new hgihway.

This bridge even has a little alcove with stone benches for viewing the beautiful scenery. After a brief stop at the bridge, we pulled into the Eagle Creek Campground - and we weren't the only ones! They really need to get a handle on the parking problem here...

Well, parking aside, the trail turned out to be quite an adventure. The engineers literally blasted it into the cliffs of the narrow gorge in many spots - thankfully providing steel cables as handholds for visitors. Here's a typical trail section that we encountered as we made our way up the canyon:

The scenery in the canyon is extraordinary! No wonder so many have flocked to hike this new trail. I'm sure people will be visiting this wonderful new park for years to come.

Hmmm. I hardly recognize that parking lot without the broken glass.

Thanks for the post.  I like the approach picture.  That lot looks pretty big, I wonder where it was?
