Silver Star Mountain 2/5/2007

Posted by retired jerry (2007-02-06)

The weather was supposed to be good so I took a quick trip to Silver Star, North approach because I haven't been there before, always did the South approach before.

Conditions of upper areas ~4000' have about a foot of snow, easily hikeable without snowshoes or anything, my feet didn't sink in more than a few inches.  Many areas are clear of snow completely.  Summit of Silver Star from about a mile North:

The North approach is rough (as always).  The last couple miles of road are fairly steep gravel and there are little "stream beds" from this winter on the road which make places where your car tire will go into causing the bottom of your passenger car to hit the ground.  It's difficult to find a route that avoids this.  I parked my car and just walked up the last 2 miles.  There were quite a few tire tracks.  A pickup, beat up van, and two 4 wheel drive vehicles passed me as I walked along (on a Monday - probably worse on the weekend).  Starting at about 2600' there was snow on the road.

I only hiked about a mile past the end of the road to where I took the picture but you can easily see the rest of the route which would have been straightforward.  I got to about 3600'.  The summit is about 4400'.

I saw this burrow that had been below the snow, but is now partly uncovered as the snow melts:

I think maybe next time I'll use the South approach because the road is better.

The south (Grouse Vista) approach passes Pyramid Rock which was home to a wayward Mountain Goat last winter!  I few members of this site got photos of it -   I don't remember who it was but someone told me the road was snowed in about a mile short of the Grouse Vista trailhead.  That's not too bad.

Who do you suppose was living in that burrow?

Thanks for the post, I wondered what conditions were like up there.  From what I could see from the Gorge a bit over a week ago what you found is about what I would have expected.

Good question on the burrow, wonder what made it?

Concerning Grouse Vista T.H. (South approach to Silver Star) - it's at 2375', there was no snow at 2200', just patches off the road at 2375', snow on road tire tracks at about 2600', so I'm pretty sure Grouse Vista would be open now.  There could be washouts of the road.  I would take a shovel with me to fix any minor washouts.

Thanks for the report and pictures. I've lived in the east Vancouver area for many years and have never been up there. I did scout a route to the area a month or so ago. I came in at the Sunset Falls Park. Some time back I read in the Oregonian that Washington had a newly minted National Recreation Trail. I was surprised to learn that it was right in my own backyard! Silver Star mountain is part of it along with, Bells Mountain & Bluff Mountain. The article described the trail as being reminiscent of Colorado. The total trail length is 29 miles. The trail name is Chinook Trail and connects several smaller trails like Silver Star trail & Ed's Trail to complete its passage from Clark to Skamania counties. A web site that describes portions of the trail is here:

I looked for the Oregonian article but couldn't find it online, though, I do have it here at the house.
