Wahkeena, Angels Rest, Foxglove, Devils Rest, Multnomah Creek/Falls, Return Trails loop. 01-06-2007

A nice way to spend about 4 hours between loads of laundry. This is a 7 mile loop (guess) open most of the year.

Only a couple of inches of snow on top of Devils Rest though it was all fogged in. A number of trees had fallen from the previous nights winds. The second metal/wood bridge crossing Wahkeena Springs Creek was completely trashed (see pic's). Looks like the Forest Service will have some work to do this summer.

I won't go into much detail on this loop as I would image most folks for done most the sections at some point. The Foxglove trail is maintained by the Mazama's and  likely is not on most maps. It's starts just a few hundred yards after the log crossing about three miles west along the Angels Rest trail and winds through the forest follow old abandoned roads the old fire lines from the from the big gorge fire back in the early nineties. Hand painted signs mark the Foxglove trail at the major junctions. Eventually you get to the top of Devils Rest and can pick up the established trails from there.

I did stop at the Forest Service office at Multnomah Falls to report the bridge and they were going to have someone go up and check it out. Also would be clearing the trail of the fallen trees.

Enjoy.

As you can see the bridge across Wahkeena Spring Creek is toast. The metal beams that make up the bridge are bent in half and the concrete foundation on the east side was pulled out of the side of the bank.

Looking back down the trail the the jumble of trees that had fallen across Wahkeena Springs Trail.

Here is the basic route though the mileage is probably not correct. More like seven or eight miles.

Wow, that's some major devastation. I guess Mother Nature has an agenda or something. I noticed today that the Powerball / Oregon Lottery sign on I-84was totally destroyed as well. Along with some very large trees that had obviously fallen onto US26 on the way to Mt. Hood. Looked like they rushed right out to at least get them cut and off the highway. Some of the guardrails were completely destroyed as well.

With the bridge being out, were you still able to get across the stream? If so, how?

How difficult was it to get through the downed trees on the Wahkeena Tr.?
