We left the house at 6am and started the hike at about 8am. Signs at the trailhead say the trail is closed due to washout on the trail. We payed no attention to it. The first mile was mostly uneventful but there were about 10 trees that fells across the trail. At the 1 mile marker we ran into snow. Not to far from that the trail and the hill slide away. There were a couple of slides and we crossed them really easily. Then we get to the hut and see that it is basically completely destroyed. The trail then goes out into the open where there was gust of about 40-50 mph. Going up to the summit the trail was covered in very slick ice, so following the trail was stuiped unless you wanted to fall. At the summit the winds were howling and hard to just stand around. Dad got some summit pictures and then we got down into the trees as fast as we could. The way down wasn't eventful. Back to the car at about 12:30pm. We saw one group of two guys going up on our way down. Then at the car we saw another group of a few people.
So if your going to climb Saddle Mountain the wash outs aren't that bad to cross. There are a lot of trees down but also easy to get by.
It was a great day with very few clouds and good to get out. We haven't been hiking since our St. Helens climb on 8/10/2006. So it felt good to get out and climb something |
