Description
Extensive volcanic eruptions 15 to 14 million years ago resulted in thick deposits of ash across what is now eastern Oregon. Subsequent glacial periods and the weathering of eons has exposed some of these ash layers in this area of the Strawberry Range. The White Badlands above Wildcat Basin are perhaps the most photogenic of these exposed ash layers.
