Spencer Butte (Gifford Pinchot)

From Oregon Hikers Field Guide

Revision as of 04:52, 9 December 2017 by Bobcat (Talk | contribs)

Lewis River and Spencer Butte from the Big Creek Falls Overlook (bobcat)

Description

The summit of Spencer Butte is accessed from both a north and south trailhead on FR 93. It's about 1.5 miles to the top from either trailhead. From the trail itself, there are views east to Mount Adams, the Indian Heaven ridgeline, and down into Cussed Hollow. You can also get a good view of Mount Saint Helens to the west from the trail south of the summit. Huckleberries, vine maple, and lupine line the trail.

At the grassy top, there is the concrete foundation of the 1935 lookout. This lookout replaced a cupola cabin constructed here in the 1920s.
