Description
The bronze statue Sacajawea and Jean-Baptiste was created by sculptor Alice Cooper to be the centerpiece of the 1905 Lewis & Clark Centennial Exposition in Portland. The unveiling of this work was attended by major feminist leaders of the day, including Susan B. Anthony. The statue was moved to its current location in 1906.
Other monuments of note in the area include:
- The Lewis & Clark Memorial, dedicated by President Theodore Roosevelt in 1903;
- The Chiming Fountain, with its interesting gargoyles, created in 1891 by Swiss artist Hans Staehli;
- The Holocaust Memorial, behind some antique brick restrooms, with a memorial wall and small bronzes of children's toys;
- The Coming of the White Man (closer to Burnside), depicting Chief Multnomah and another Native American.
Driving Directions
From south of downtown:
Drive I-405 north and take Exit 2A for Salmon Street and PGE Park. After exiting keep left and drive to a traffic light.
After the traffic light, go one block and turn left on Taylor Street.
Drive one block to 15th Avenue and turn left.
Go one block to Salmon Street and turn right.
Keep straight on Salmon for 0.4 miles until you reach King Street.
Here make a right and then make the first left onto Park Place.
Drive 0.2 miles to Lewis and Clark Circle, where you must go right.
Drive 0.2 miles and find parking on the left side of the road near the Sacajawea Statue.

Tri-met Bus #63 stops at the Hoyt Arboretum Visitor Center.
