Rho Ridge Guard Station

Description

This fairly substantial guard station once sat on the western edge of Rhododendron Meadow, which is slowly constricting in size as more lodgepole pines sprout around its edges. The cabin is now completely collapsed and there are a few remains of the occupation, including a rusting 44-gallon drum. Near the guard station is the lush spring that once supplied it with fresh water.

In the middle decades of the 20th century, the guard station was a 'hub' for nearby lookouts, for example at Mount Lowe and Burnt Granite, but the original purpose was to monitor the movement of livestock in the area.
